Our Philosophy

At Davenport Creative Arts Therapy, our philosophy is rooted in the understanding that our mind and body are intimately connected. We believe that in order to transform your mental health, you can’t just simply treat behaviors, or thought patterns. This is why “talk” therapy falls short for many.

We offer a holistic approach to mental wellness, combining creative, mind-body, cognitive, and behavioral methods. Our non-pathologizing, and affirming therapists accept you for who you are, and also acknowledge that some patterns of thinking, behaving, or relating are are inhibiting growth.

Our approach to psychotherapy combines top-down and bottom up therapies. Top-down therapy, including talk therapy, CBT, DBT, and EMDR, focuses on cognitive and emotional processing to reframe negative thoughts and process memories, reducing distress.

Bottom-up therapy acknowledges the physiological and somatic aspects of trauma, and other mental health challenges that affect both mind and body. Techniques like Art Therapy and mindfulness-based interventions help regulate the nervous system and release stored energy.

Our art therapy integrated approach elevates and enriches traditional psychotherapy, increasing pathways that promote healing and wellness.

What Sets Us Apart

Our goal is to help our clients not only reduce symptoms, but also move toward a more harmonious relationship with themselves. What distinguishes Davenport Creative Arts Therapy from other practices, is our standard of clinical excellence, investment in our therapists, and creative treatment methods. We help our clients to create lifelong change, and do not believe in band-aid therapy.

Davenport Creative Arts Therapy invests in their therapists so that they can invest in you. That’s why our therapists are employees (not contractors) and participate in weekly supervision, mentorship, and in-service trainings above and beyond the New York State standard.

Traditional Therapy can feel limiting. You can’t always “talk” your way out of anxiety and depression.

At Davenport Creative Arts Therapy, we employ a diversity of treatment modalities to help our clients increase confidence, connection and joy.

Our methods are always influenced by the latest research, and neuroscience. Each of our therapists holds training in at least 2 of the following modalities; Art Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and The Nurtured Heart Approach.

We understand that every client is unique, and responds to therapy differently. That’s why we combined methods to make way to opportunities for growth and connection.

Our Founders Story

Emily Davenport is a New York Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, and Registered / Board-Certified Art Therapist.

After a decade of working in New York based mental health facilities, Emily saw an overwhelming need for holistic therapy. In 2018, shortly after giving birth to her first child, she opened Davenport Creative Arts Therapy; a group practice of Art Therapists with dual training in the latest evidence-based “talk” therapy methods.

Since then, Davenport Creative Arts Therapy has continued to grow, flourish and diversify. The company is passionate about serving children, teens, and adults, in addition to providing wellness services to companies, and continuing education courses to clinicians.
