Hi! I'm Emily Davenport.
Hi! I'm Emily Davenport.
I’m a Licensed Board-Certified Art Therapist who specializes in holistic BPD therapy for teens, adults and their parents.
I hold 300 hours of intensive in-person training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), over two-years, with the Treatment Implementation Collaborative under Dr. Shari Manning PhD.
With 14-years of clinical experience supporting folks with BPD and traumatic stress, my approach integrates Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Art Therapy to foster well-being.
Effective BPD treatment works to uncover and heal traumatic experiences, while also supporting clients to find new ways to regulate their emotions.
In order to heal emotion regulation issues, you need to access your "emotional brain” (limbic system).
Our Emotional brain, or limbic system, is responsible for processing emotions and triggering the body's stress response. When the limbic system becomes overactive, it can lead to chronic conditions like anxiety, trauma responses and emotion regulation issues. .
Traditional talk therapy does not help you access your limbic system as it focuses solely on our “thinking” brain.
My approach helps clients with BPD regulate and heal their nervous system through evidence-based, creative and body-based therapy.
I integrate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with Art Therapy to treat Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to help individuals who struggle with managing emotions. DBT promotes both acceptance and change, blending principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Zen mindfulness practices.
Originally created to treat borderline personality disorder and suicidal ideation, DBT has since been proven effective in addressing a wide range of mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, PTSD, and eating disorders.
I help teens and adults living with BPD live full, authentic, and balanced lives.
If you’re struggling with the following, I can help:
Feeling inadequate, insecure or worthless
All-or-nothing thinking
Difficulties trusting or connecting with others (and yourself)
Self-Harm
Emotion Dysregulation
Impulsive or destructive behavioral patterns
Unhelpful or turbulent relationship patterns
I specialize in using these techniques to treat BPD:
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
Art Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills
Art Therapy acts as a bridge between your mind and body, allowing you to access underlying experiences that contribute to BPD symptoms.
Art Therapy is a type of psychotherapy involving creative self expression through various art making materials.
Through guided art making and talk therapy, individuals work towards resolving underlying stressors, practicing coping strategies, and actively soothing anxiety and stress.
What do BPD Therapy sessions look like with an Art Therapist?
You do not need to be “artistic” or “creative” to benefit from my approach (really).
I offer creative, body-based, and DBT based therapy interventions to help you access the root of BPD.
We’ll make art, and practice evidence-based therapy techniques in addition to talking.
You don’t need to “make art” in every session. However, we will offer the option of therapeutic art making as a tool to help you address anxiety.
Here’s what you can expect:
Together, we’ll identify your goals and create a vision of your “life worth living.”
You’ll learn essential DBT skills in four key areas: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation. Additionally, I offer complementary mind-body approaches like Art Therapy and EMDR, where appropriate, to support your healing alongside DBT-informed therapy.
Our work will include weekly therapy sessions, with homework assignments and diary cards to track progress. I also provide phone coaching between sessions as needed for additional support.
While I do not operate within a fully adherent DBT program (which includes DBT skills groups or a DBT consultation team), I follow many DBT protocols and adapt them to fit your unique needs.
